Put in Location: | Carry or drag kayak a ways to landing from parking lot. Easy kayak entry with steps. I put in below the dam - instead of starting at my last takeout at Riverside Parkway Canoe Access to avoid the portage. (Riverside is an EXCELLENT spot to put in or takeout, as you can drive on pavement right up to the river. |
Take out Location: | River left prior to Channahon Dam. A bit of a haul to the parking lot, where I caught a Lyft back to Hammel with my paddle and gear. Driver arrived in about 15 minutes. I drove my vehicle back to Channahon Park to pick up the kayak, which I had locked up. |
Round trip carshift time (min): | 30 |
Report: | My first time on this section; so far I have floated the entire way on multiple trips starting at Lion's Park this year. First half hour was very fast with nice flow and no wind. Went 3 miles in 30 minutes, and 7.5 miles in 90 minutes. Slowed down after the Chinooka launch,m where a couple of smallmouth fishermen on pontoons were taking out. I actually had to paddle the remaining 2.5 miles! Loved the fast winding section, and look forward to doing it again in higher water. One has to make some decisions on which way to go around islands, and what line to take. Scraped bottom a couple times, but not stuck. Next time I might take out at Chinooka and avoid the slower final section. After picking up my boat, I jumped on my bike for a brief ride downstream on the I&M trail to McKinley Park. Very woodsy, nice open ride. I love all the I&M history. Saw a lot of wildlife. Been using Google maps "Timeline" function to track my trips; not always accurate, but interesting resource. |
