Report:   Four of us (Bharat M., Susan S., Greg W. and Jim C.) decided to paddle this wonderful stretch of Wolf River a.k.a. Wolf Section 3 with at least 8 good rapids; a fan favorite for many whitewater paddlers for warming up and going into the main season. This was an unplanned and impromptu trip. We were not alone on this beautiful day, we found a lot of whitewater canoes and kayaks practicing near the popular Boy Scout’s rapids.

In the morning we had a little trouble finding breakfast. When we first went to Bear Paw, we found out that they do not serve breakfast. The night before we had been to Crab N Jack’s who told us, they don’t serve breakfast either. Finally we found out that a new place called Wolf River Roots (converted from an old church) serves breakfast and it turned out to be very good. The owner was the former owner of Bear Paw, Jamee Peters. She has done a fantastic job of creating this beautiful place supporting local artists, selling some great merchandize and wonder hot breakfast. If you recall, Bear Paw was destroyed in a 2008 tornado.

What is nice about this section of Wolf River is that you get a good warm up stretch before you arrive at the first set of rapids and between every rapid, there is a nice quiet stretch of flat water giving you some breathing room to rest, recover and get a snack or get a sip of water before you arrive at the next one. American Whitewater mentions Crowle rapids, Horserace Rapids, Twenty Day Rapids, Garfield (a.k.a. Boyscout Rapids), Hansen’s Rapids and finally Gilmore’s Mistake at the takeout. There are at least 2 or 3 other rapids of about 1/3 mile in length but the BoyScout’s was the longest (1/2 mile) and one of the two meatiest rapids on this whole stretch. At 577 cfs, the rapids were quite a good mix of drops, pillows and gave us a wonderful stretch of rock garden to practice maneuvering. I had many good braces and some, well many questionable moves. But we all survived and enjoyed the trip. We also saw a pair of Bald Eagles, one had just flown off to fish and the other one was perhaps baby-sitting the young ones. For anyone who is not familiar with rivers of Northern WI, the rivers are pretty scenic and clean with no big cities or factories near by.
